1975-76

No date on this single-sided A4 black & white leaflet for LED (light emitting diode) watches, but such watches generally became affordable around 1975 after Texas Instruments started mass production.

Soon the LED displays were superseded by liquid crystal displays (LCDs), which used less battery power and were much more convenient in use, with the display always visible and no need to push a button before seeing the time.

It is significant that both designs are on sale within the Plustronics catalogue for 1978-79 (see below).

Portable TVs have now become complete entertainment centres, with radios & cassette players; also portable colour TVs.
Named the 'unputdownables'.

Pocket calculators now include LCD versions and LCD wrist watches have become sophisticated, with multi-functions, alarms, date memo and games.

A Plustronics TVRC 7D combined 7" b&w TV, radio and tape cassette player / recorder. With its UHF & VHF TV frequencies, VHF, LW & MW radio frequencies, battery & mains operation, it's a very versatile 'Unputdownable'. It was advertised in the above 1980-81 Plustronics catalogue and one can be seen standing upright on the catalogue cover (above left - to the rear of the images, just in front of the TV set).

The one shown left has recently (February 2009) been purchased by Alistair Lark off eBay for a modest £5.50p. Alistair says "It is in full working order, solidly built & after a thorough cleanup, in superb condition!"

Charles Strasser and John Kirk both agree that the unit originated from the Japanese company Orion Electric, then owned by Mr. Otake. Charles recalls "He was a real Samurai style Japanese entrepreneur and I loved doing business with him over many years. Most of the Plustron units were designed over dinner, somewhere in Japan, on the proverbial back of a cigarette packet and he would have wooden mockups for approval ready almost always the next day. Orion is today probably one of the world's largest suppliers of OEM electronic products in the world. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orion_Electric."

1982

1982 4-sided A4 leaflet devoted to Plustron microwave ovens.

"Tune into a new way of cooking with Plustron microwaves!"
